I collect objects and draw and paint them. The objects that I collect are usually obsolete recording devices though my head can be turned by anything in a box. I am not a collector. I am too fickle and objects often have a limited period of interest for me.
Painting is a natural choice of medium as I never get tired of its power to transform and animate. I didn’t grow up in an era of mass media and my recollection of TV as a child, one of the earliest influences on my interest in narrative, is that it was slow, deliberate and awkward with plenty of gaps between to speculate. I am happy to tease out a seemingly insignificant story from an object and its contemporaries. Sometimes I recognise my own stories and I never fail to be amused and entertained by this process and by the relationships that form in my paintings. Recent work explores images of the Alps in Switzerland as romantic backdrops to these speculative narratives. Objects that appear in paintings re appear as cardboard facsimiles and paintings find their way back onto package nets.
